Fairy Doors – What are they?
I’m sure by now, some of you will have stumbled across a Fairy Door at one time or another. Whether scrolling through social media or even out for a walk in a wooded area – these little doors are popping up everywhere! Traditionally used outdoors and placed at the base of a tree or in a garden, these enchanted fairy doors have become increasingly more popular as a fun yet cute fixture within the home.
But what exactly are they?
Legend says that these enchanted doors are actually a portal to the magical kingdom - a way for mythical creatures to travel between their world and ours. The name “Fairy Door” might imply that these doors are only for use by fairies….but oh no – they work for all types of mythical folk! Creatures that have been known to make an appearance through these doors include elves, pixies and even leprechauns. In fact, we have it in good authority that these fairy doors just so happen to be the Tooth Fairy’s preferred entry point when collecting all of those baby teeth! All you do is put a fairy door in a kid’s room, and voila, now the Tooth Fairy will show.
Why do I want a Fairy Door?
Not only does a fairy door look super cute in the home or yard, they are an awesome way to encourage imaginative play and even good behavior in kids. When your mythical creature takes up residence in your home, kiddos are encouraged to leave notes, drawings, and even little treats for their new friend. Encouraging creativity, imagination and independence is especially important in today’s world as we are constantly surround by technology. Can you think back to when you were younger and told “tales” of the fairy you spotted in the garden? Or perhaps you caught the Easter Bunny leaving some goodies for you? This is the type of imagination that we need to encourage in kids, and a fairy door is a fantastic way to do just that.
Where should I put my Fairy Door?
The answer to this is simple – a fairy door can be placed pretty much anywhere in the home (or yard of course). If you’d like to enjoy with the entire family, you can place your fairy door in a communal area such as the living room or kitchen. The most common [indoor] spot for a fairy door is without a doubt in a kid’s bedroom. They can leave little shiny little gifts for their fairy or even leave a special note for when the Tooth Fairy comes.
